Encouraging Professionalism in Chinuch – E.P.I.C.

            

 

The Associated Talmud Torahs is proud to share with the community details of an innovative professional development program that has taken place for the past eight years. E.P.I.C. - Encouraging Professionalism in Chinuch has had over 70 Judaic and general studies teachers as participants in the program.  Akiba Schechter, Arie Crown Hebrew Day School, Cheder Lubavitch Hebrew School, Hillel Torah, Ida Crown Jewish Academy, Joan Dachs Bais Yaakov, Yeshiva Ohr Boruch, Yeshivas Tiferes Tzvi, Bais Yaakov High School, Hanna Sacks Bais Yaakov, Lubavitch Girls High School, and Yeshivas Meor HaTorah have all participated and principals have enthusiastically supported the program. We are currently planning for an ninth successful year.


E.P.I.C. is a collaborative effort between the Associated Talmud Torahs, Association for Torah Advancement, and National Louis University. How is E.P.I.C. implemented? The 5-month program takes place on each participating school’s site. National Louis University provides mentors that meet with principals and participants before the program commences.  The mentors schedule pre-arranged bi-weekly classroom visits.  Prior to each visit, the mentor and mentee meet to discuss the upcoming lesson. After each lesson, the mentor and the participant have a post observation conference to review the mentor’s observations and the mentee’s reflections.  The focus of the meeting is to discuss the lesson’s strengths, weaknesses, and ways to improve the delivery of instruction. The program is individualized for each participant and school.

The goal of this project is to enable educators to be reflective about their teaching practices and to raise the bar for themselves.  The program offers real solutions to a wide array of challenges that instructors face in their classrooms.  Participants have used E.P. I.C. to enhance classroom management, learning environments, delivery of instruction, assessments, and interpersonal relationships between their students. The strength of E.P.I.C. stems from ongoing supervision and personal reflections which are the cornerstones of the program.  E.P.I.C. provides another set of eyes for problem solving and gives positive feedback to the participants.
